| Where will you take your inspiration from in 2013? |
Welcome to the first ‘Diary of a Workshop Leader’ blog post.
Creative Writes workshops have been on a short break over the Holidays and as 2012 draws to an end and the New Year awaits – I have been thinking about what inspires us to write. Who and what gives us no choice but to write, to express our feelings and the effect they have on our lives?
In the summer, I became an auntie for the first time. I was overwhelmed by this incredible, life altering experience and it took a while to process. By the autumn, I knew that I had to turn this experience into words because writing and poetry/poetic prose in particular, is how I make sense of the world – of my world. I wrote a series of five poems, in London and Inverness – using photos of my nephew and I to get started. As I placed the words on the page, I was able to capture the first days of his life. This Christmas, I presented my nephew with a handmade book of the poems. As I read the poems out to our family around the table, we relived these moments and reflected on the journey that had brought us to our first Christmas with this new addition – sharing the knowledge that our lives will never be the same.
I barely edited the poems, they were presented as raw as they had appeared on my notebook because the words that first formed were the words that I had been searching for. They had been circulating around my head and heart & the pen was merely a vessel for them to be released.
Try this:
Take some time to reflect on what inspires you – what are you burning to write about? Write lists if it helps and start to write about one of the ideas on your list. If the passion is there, that is all you need. Just move the pen and the rest is easy.
