What will you prioritise this year?
Happy New Year! I hope 2013 has got off to a fantastic start for you.
At the end of last year, I promised regular blog posts for Diary of a Workshop Leader and I have been thinking about what this life as a full time self-employed business woman entails.
There is a temptation when a new year approaches to get a little over enthusiastic (well, in my case anyhow!) and schedule lots of workshops. Enthusiasm and energy is great but when all the departments of a company are staffed by one person – there are times when we have to reign it in a little. This realisation began to hit me over the past few days when focusing on publicity. I was faced with a long list of workshops that were due to start close together and it seemed impossible to prioritise. I took a breath, spoke to a friend and took another look at the programme. There was no reason why some of these workshops couldn’t be moved to the Spring – nobody would lose out.
I switched some dates and instantly felt better with a schedule that was more manageable.
Taking that step back was so beneficial – I highly recommend it. Sometimes it is necessary to choose a slightly different path. I am learning more about running a business every day. I am learning how important it is to allow time for all areas of the business – admin, finance, publicity, meetings, workshop planning and of course workshop delivery. When I looked at the packed workshop schedule, there was very little time for all of these other aspects. With a new year, there will be new partnerships and ventures for Creative Writes and it was important to allow space for these to develop.
During the recent Creative Writes ‘Blogs Etc’ workshops – we looked at goal setting, for both our personal and professional lives. We used free flow writing to get to the truth and to find clarity.
Try this; Write for ten minutes ‘I want’ and then take a breath and write for another ten minutes ‘ I don’t want.’ Try not to think too much or edit. Repeat as required!
