What was your creative resolution when the clocks struck midnight?

When you counted down to midnight and welcomed in 2013, what were your Creative Resolutions? Was one of them to write more? To start writing? To finish your novel? To write a memoir?

This week, I have had a sudden increase in enquiries about the Creative Writes Masterclasses, particularly from those who have been wanting so very much to write for several years. Each of them expressed this strong desire but it was coupled with an absolute fear of placing words on a page. They were afraid that these words would not be good enough – that the voice in their head would say these words were rubbish. Some had desires to write in a particular genre but the challenge had grown so huge to them over the years that they hadn’t been able to make a start. They were terrified at the thought of attending a class where their work would be critiqued or ‘ripped to shreds’ as one of them said, as they felt that this would send them right back to the start and they would never put pen to paper again.

I was able to explain what does and doesn’t happen in a Creative Writes Workshop – group workshops and one to one Masterclasses (including Skype). What happens is that you write – nobody leaves with an empty page. We use the fast paced free flow writing method, which means there isn’t time to worry. What doesn’t happen is critique on the writing, which means that we don’t feel we have to write in a particular way and we develop our own judgement, style and confidence in a supportive environment. During the Masterclasses in particular, I guide you through a series of exercises that are adapted to suit your interests and in some cases – a project that you would like to focus on. It is not necessary to prepare anything before we begin working together.
Try this:
Write a list of ideas that you want to write about but don’t think too much! Set your clock for 10 minutes, you may be surprised with what you write. You can add to this list later too. Pick something from the list and just start writing – 10 minutes is always a good time to set your clock for.

If you have any questions about Masterclasses or other Creative Writes workshops – please send me an email or give me a call. Masterclasses are one or two hours, you can attend as many as you wish and they are arranged at a time to suit you (these classes take place in Muswell Hill, N10).

There is a full listing of workshops on this website and includes Women’s Writes, Themed Workshops & Children’s Workshops: https://www.creativewrites.co.uk/p/bookings.html
