Hello,
I know it’s been a little quiet on the blogging front from this side – I haven’t forgotten about you! It has been a whirlwind of activity and to be honest, I am not sure where to begin…
I am delighted to be settled in a new flat, back in central Muswell Hill and love being closer to my fantastic community again. We have just one week left of our Creative Writes five week block of workshops which has been going really well. It has been great to have more time for the group to form a bond and we have been able to explore a range of content. I have adapted the content as we go, based on the interests of the group. It is always best to be flexible when approaching the workshops and to listen to the concerns of the participants. We all get much more out if it that way.
Workshop content for this group and my other regular creative writing groups has included a week of tweets (140 characters for each day of the week) and poetry inspired by Ian Mcmillan for National Poetry Day. We looked at his poem ’10 Things Found In a Shipwrecked Sailor’s Pocket’ and wrote poems about ourselves and also our characters. Here are a couple of examples from my group in Kew:
15 Things Found In A Fairy Godmother’s Flight Case
1 A wand (with charger)
2 Detachable, folding gossamer wings
3 Party dress with red net petticoat
4 Sturdy boots and a spare pair of socks
5 A toothbrush
6 Emergency sewing kit (including needles)
7 A bottle of herbal esteem-raising tincture
8 Mrs Beaton’s Book of Secret Household Spells
9 A humane trap for small rodents
10 A small bag of raisins for bait
11 A cardboard box with holes in it filled with silk worm cocoons
12 A fake lizard-skin handbag containing a lizard
13 One pumpkin
14 A bar of chocolate just in case
15 And a large tin of glitter

Try this:
Write your own list poem. Start with yourself – what is in your bag/pocket/purse/wallet etc? The title’s are important here – they do a lot of work. Then try a list poem for a character/archetype. Set your clock for ten minutes. Enjoy!

I am also about to embark on a new project with one of my C&C (Central & Cecil) creative writing groups at a Sheltered Housing Scheme. The idea for the project came from recent work on the Bloomsbury Set. We are teaming up with an art group from another C&C Housing Scheme and plan to create our own newspaper. To inspire us, we went on a trip to Charleston House in Susssex (pictured) – the home and country meeting place of the Bloomsbury Set. The ideas flowed and we are excited about beginning the project this week.
