Cut Up Poetry Workshop, Claremont  Centre last week

A participant’s poem – Cut Up Workshop
Claremont, Cut Up Poetry

I have recently joined a very lively aerobics class. As I giggled with my friend in the back row and moved in the wrong direction, I started to think about the connection between aerobics and creative writing. The aerobics instructor is very encouraging and motivating and when I tell her I am struggling to learn the steps and keep up with the pace, she says it is ok – I should just show up, keep moving and enjoy. The steps will follow.

It’s all the same isn’t it? With writing, however resistant and afraid – it’s about showing up and going through the steps – even if you feel lost.

It’s about movement too, movement of the pen across the page. It’s about challenging ourselves, pushing forward – one step at a time.

I also know that if it wasn’t for my friend and neighbour motivating me and waiting for me on the corner of the street to go to class every week, it would be much harder. So, invite the support of friends and family. Show up and you will be amazed. You may even have a giggle in the process!

I have been delivering a series of  Cut Up Poetry Workshops across different groups in the past week and it has been wonderful to witness the way it frees up the participants. They are relaxed, laughing and creating very powerful poems. If we are given the space to dance and write, who knows what will happen?

NEXT AT CREATIVE WRITES…

We are dancing towards the end of 2015! Next for Creative Writes is our block of three Wednesdays from 2nd December. The last Themed Workshop of the year is Myriad of Objects on Monday 7th December. All workshops are 7.30-9.30pm and take place in central Muswell Hill, North London. Full details on request. Here is a quote from a recent Creative Writes Workshop participant:
“Just to thank you again for another brilliantly run workshop. My note book is just flooded with so many inspirational ideas.

Never boring, never dull, never repetitive – Always exciting, fun, informative and sincere smile emotic

Yet again a lovely group of people to be part of and what better way than to spend an evening writing, listening, talking and laughing and all over tea and biscuits. I think that what’s you call ‘nailed it’.”

Look forward to hearing from you,
