Let Free Flow Writing take you anywhere!

Hello,

I am looking forward to delivering the Creative Writes guest workshop at the Urban Writers’ Retreat this Sunday 23rd September in the City. The Retreats are fantastic and I am very honoured to be a part of it.

Charlie – the brain behind the Retreats, asked me to put some free flow writing ideas together for her newsletter to get everyone warmed up for Sunday. I thought I would share these with you. Enjoy! There are still some last minute places too if you wish to book. Please see their website for info and contact Charlie directly to book:
 http://www.urbanwritersretreat.co.uk/one-day-writing-retreats/

1. Quickly write a list of subjects /ideas/genres that you have always wanted to try to write about. Then pick one and go for it! Set the clock for ten minutes.
2. Write a list of fictional and non-fictional characters, which can include celebrities or people you admire. Only give yourself a minute or two, then pick one to write about. Time yourself and write without stopping for 10 minutes.
3. Take a ten minute walk, just around your local area or on your way to work from the tube is fine. Think of a particular colour as you walk. As soon as you can, sit down with your notebook and just write for ten minutes. It will be interesting to see how your observation and descriptive powers have been heightened/altered, particularly if it is a route you are familiar with. Did you notice anything different today? It’s fine if your mind wanders!

You can adapt the format to give you a huge number of new exercises (for example, make your list places rather than characters, think of a sound when you walk, etc.).

‘People love Nichola’s classes and find them unexpectedly freeing, so I’m really looking forward to it.’
