CREATIVE WRITES RESEARCH PROJECT:
A couple of weeks ago, I put out a call to speak to ten North London Women who were interested in creative writing.
Creative Writes was born around four years ago and is now a full time business. It therefore seemed a good time to take stock and find out what people want and where they are focusing their time and energy. Creative Writes workshops are for both men & women but I decided to speak to women initially as they currently make up the majority of participants. Participants have travelled across town and country to attend the workshops over the years but a considerable proportion are from North London where the workshops are based, so I decided to focus on North Londoners for this part of the research.
The response to the call out has been wonderful and I am now over half way through the project, so I wanted to share with you what I have discovered so far.
To summarise, what I have heard from the women is that they have a natural passion for creative writing and a need to write. Writing is seen as a tool with which to order their thoughts, express emotions and share personal stories. There is also interest in experimenting with interweaving fiction and memoir.
The women want to be motivated and supported in accessing their creativity. They want to take risks with their writing and learn new tools & ideas – build their practice. There is also a need to share the process of writing. The teaching approach they are looking for is enabling and freeing.
There was an interest in attending local Creative Writes workshops aswell as Skype workshops.
The research project has been incredibly affirming so far and I am looking forward to speaking to everyone else. As it is proving so productive, I am happy to speak to more women than originally planned.
