Hello & Welcome to the Creative Writes blog!
Autumn has certainly reached a remarkable speed, to match the vigorous winds!
Our Playing with Poetry and Words workshop was good fun and we celebrated National Poetry Day with Water Themed Poetry by Sylvia Plath & Samuel Taylor Coleridge and then wrote our own poems along this theme. We will return to the picturesque North Bank house and gardens in Muswell Hill, N10 for our Themed Creating Character Workshop on Wednesday 20 November and Myriad of Objects on Wednesday on 11 December, both 7.30-9.30pm. The last Creating Character Workshop was fully booked, so do book your place asap to avoid disappointment.
I have been darting between Muswell Hill, Kew and Walthamstow teaching workshops in a range of venues – including a garage on a housing estate! Next week brings the start of my Words Over Waltham Forest Festival Workshops and I am very excited! The FREE Hanging Words Out to Dry Reminiscence and Writing Workshops with Rochelle Scholar from Mendham Writers are taking place at the Beulah Road ‘Deep Clean’ Launderette in Walthamstow Village 10am-12pm on 7 & 14 November. The workshop on Thursday 7 November is nearly full but there are spaces for 14 November. I have taught three workshops this month in the lead up to the Stranger Neighbour ‘Starting to Write in E17’ Residency, in collaboration with the drawing shed and Arvon. As this is an inter-generational project for Waltham Forest residents, I visited a school in the borough for one of the workshops and hopefully some of the students will be joining us for the weekend at William Morris and Winns Gallery on 8-10 November. A group of us will also be going to ‘An Audience with Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy’ on Saturday evening (2 November) with music by John Sampson. This will take place in Walthamstow Town Hall & it is FREE, check it out and join us if you can!
The theme of Home has been recurring during my workshops recently and will also be a focus during the Stranger Neighbour Residency. Try this: Ask ‘what does home mean to me?’ It doesn’t have to be a physical place. Write for ten minutes without thinking!
