| A View from the Bridge – Young Vic |
I was fortunate enough to see the new theatre production of Arthur Miller’s ‘A View from the Bridge’ at the Young Vic on Saturday. It was mind blowing. It really was.
As we wiped away our tears at the end and tried to come back down to earth, we asked what it was that made it so powerful. The staging, direction and acting were seamless and impeccably crafted. But it was more than that. Arthur Miller had laid his words bare and these words formed characters who could be nothing but real and raw – particularly the lead role Eddie, played by Mark Strong. As we know, a character doesn’t have to be likable, you don’t have to be on their side – to be taken in and washed away by their power. You don’t have to agree with their choices to be immersed in their passion and see your self in some way reflected back at you. Eddie is conflicted and torn apart by a passion he can not really grasp.
There is no hiding here. It is ultimately the courage of the words which flowed out of Arthur Miller that hooks us in;
Just remember, kid, you can quicker get back a million dollars that was stole than a word that you gave away. A View from the Bridge
A much used quote from Howards End by E. M. Forster, which has inspired me since I first came across it in my school days;
Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its highest. Live in fragments no longer. Only connect, and the beast and the monk, robbed of the isolation that is life to either, will die. Howards End
So my message today is be brave with your writing. Write from a place of truth. Lay down the words without censorship. One word after another. You will feel the difference.
This is when I love to write the most, when the passion fuels my writing – it has a life of its own. This formed part of the foundation for Creative Writes and this is what we do – together. We find our voice. We tap into our passion, even if its quietly and gently. Join us!

Our new Summer Surgery is on Saturday 21 June, 2-5pm where you will have the chance to try out different writing stations.
There will be a block of three Tuesday workshops on 15, 22 & 29 July, 7.30pm.
All workshops are in Muswell Hill, N10. There is a maximum of ten people in each workshop.

A new opportunity at Creative Writes…
I have a vacancy for an Intern to work with me at Creative Writes for a set period. The position is unpaid but in return you will be invited to attend all of the Creative Writes Spring/Summer group workshops. This will enable you to participate in the writing, observe how the workshops are run and meet writers. The 8 hours a week will be spent in Muswell Hill, assisting me with admin, finance and publicising the workshops online & in the local area.
Where: Muswell Hill, N10
Times: 8 hours a week, every week between end May & end July.
