Have you ever been to a workshop and wondered what the tutor does as their ‘real job,’ or their ‘day job’ & what they are doing when they are not teaching you for the two hours each week?
Well, I thought it would be fun to give you a little snap shot behind the scenes at Creative Writes and help answer this question…
It is the second week with my wonderful new volunteer Lanna, who is assisting with a range of administrative tasks and marketing. She also attended her first Creative Writes workshop last week – it was a full house at Myriad of Objects and a buzzing atmosphere.
It’s great to have Lanna on board and to share the behind the scenes experience with her. Here are some photos of us working yesterday afternoon. Lanna even managed to smile while filing receipts and updating spreadsheets! To try and compensate, I brought out grapes and figs…

While Lanna patiently ploughed on – I prepared for interviews, read resources and planned the marketing & publicity which needs to be done for Creative Writes. You can see ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ in the pile of books and resources here. It was the book chosen by the monthly Book Group I facilitate in Kew. It was discussed on Monday but I hadn’t quite finished it, so read some more yesterday. I am finding it a difficult and exhausting book, which is why I didn’t finish it on time. I wasn’t alone! I respect the craft of the writing and the wonderful storytelling & imagery. But it isn’t a book I have always been in the mood to read and found it a challenge to fit in with all of the other reading and research I do. I was also planning my workshop material for next week, which includes a second workshop for Central & Cecil’s sheltered housing residents. I am really looking forward to it. Writing this blog post and working with Lanna, has made me much more aware of all the different hats I wear in a typical week. A huge variety of skills are used and there are always new challenges. This is a very ‘real job’ and is more than full time…I wouldn’t swap it for the world.
Whether self employed or employed – think about all the different jobs you do in a week and all the different skills you use. Surprised?! Be proud of yourselves!
