We have been looking at the powerful poem below in my creative writing and reading groups recently – Origins by Imelda Maguire. The poem has provoked some really interesting discussions around where we come from and powerful poetry, across the different groups – including my weekly block of three workshops in Muswell Hill and the Care Homes. I hope you enjoy reading it.
Origins
I come from a bog-cotton
hawk-cry, flat, plain place,
from a father who was
a motherless boy.
I come from a factory-chimney,
mouth-of-the-river city,
from a line of strong, proud
women, good with their hands,
from a mother who was
eldest of eight,
working at twelve,
keeping house for families
where children older than she
were cosseted and sent to school.

It’s a full house on my April block of three workshops and it’s flown by, with the final session this Wednesday. There will be another block of three workshops in June, running on Wednesday evenings 3, 10 & 17 June 2015, 7.30-9.30pm in Muswell Hill, N10.
