WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT? – Creative Writes

The workshops create time just to write

In the autumn of 2008 I was about to leave a full time post in Arts Management, where I had worked for six years. I wanted a change and I felt that it was time to go back to my roots – to my passion. My decision to set up creating writing workshops was quite simple – almost dumb. I thought it was a great opportunity to try out an idea. I loved to write, I loved to teach. I would combine these two things and give it a go. I ran some trial workshops for friends & family and I was fueled by their honest & positive reactions. It was an opportunity to share ideas and an approach that I believed in wholeheartedly. I didn’t for one minute question the approach and its positive effects.

Based on the success of the trial workshops – I booked a lovely local venue, posted online ads and spread the word. But I hadn’t really thought of it as a ‘business!’ It was what I like to call an ‘inside out’ approach. The first set of three workshops in Muswell Hill were fully booked and I had the time of my life. The group seemed very happy too and I am still working with some of the participants from the early days. What was to later become Creative Writes developed from a passion and a need to build a community of writers. I wanted to provide Space & Time in a nurturing environment, which focussed on the writing itself – the process. These elements were branches of a tree, which just continued to grow!

Try this:

Spend some time thinking about what fuels you. Ask yourself ‘What makes me different, what is my passion?’ I am sure lots of answers will flow if you set the clock for ten minutes and write ‘I am’ or ‘I want.’ Just keep writing. Don’t worry about where it is going.

And back to the present….

Fast Forward to Summer 2013 and the ScreenDeep/Museum of London – Docklands project is coming to an end after a very busy few months. We had our recording session on site at Hoxton Hall and thanks to wonderful friends, we were able to create & record authentic audience noises and Music Hall sounds. Thanks to Hoxton Hall for being so accommodating too!

A week later, we were back in the recording studio, working with three more voice over artists to add to the layers of sound for the final audio piece. I am really excited about hearing it all! We are hoping to gather together our group from the Museum of London -Docklands workshops in July to listen to and celebrate our audio. More news on this soon…

The theatre at Hoxton Hall

Last month, I ran a ‘Blogging Outside the Box’ workshop for my local networking group in Muswell Hill, SBN (Small Business Networking). We had a great turnout and it was most enjoyable being able to share what I do with the group – especially after having been a member for over three years. I guided the group through fast paced writing exercises and shared ideas to ‘get blogging’ without fear! We will be returning to the Clissold Arms pub in East Finchley/Muswell Hill from September 2013 for another block of ‘Blogs Etc’ workshops. Please see our Bookings & Info page for details.

I returned this week to Sutton House for the Creative Writes Summer Saturday Writes. What a treat to be back! I am working with a new group who are also already in awe and inspired by this incredible historic house. It is wonderful to be able to offer this sanctuary and I look forward to the next three sessions. We also hope to offer another block of workshops this autumn. Watch this space!
