| Have you seen my bulldozer?

My two year old nephew lost one of his favourite toys recently – his bulldozer. His sole mission became to find the missing bulldozer. Being very eloquent for a two year old, wherever he went – on a bus, to a party, into a shop – he would ask ‘Have you seen my bulldozer?’ to anybody he met. The majority of people he asked probably thought it was just a toddler being funny and not really knowing what he was talking about. This was not the case. On he went, enquiring, investigating, searching. Eventually of course, he found the bulldozer at the bottom of one of his toy boxes. The point is, he didn’t give up. I think there’s a lot to be learnt from toddlers. They don’t have the restraints that we build around us as adults. They are not afraid of being judged, of being ignored, of rejection. If my nephew calls me from another room and I haven’t heard him or I don’t respond right away, he will call louder & louder until I go and see him. It is simple – he has a goal and he will continue until he reaches that goal.
I was talking with a friend the other day on our walk through the woods and we were laughing about how as writers, we have naturally enquiring minds. That’s how we know we have to be a writer. Every time we are given a piece of information, however small – we want to know more. We are intrigued and we try to find out as many details as possible. To illustrate this point – my sister (affectionately) calls me ‘Miss What, Why, When, How?!’ As I say to her, I don’t intend to interrogate people, I am just inquisitive. I genuinely want to hear their stories. And of course, as my friend and I were saying – what better foundation for writing? What a wonderful way of ensuring that our writing is authentic. We may hold the picture of a particular person in our minds and then we build on what we already know, on the truth.
What do you know? Who or what do you want to know more about? Enquire. Investigate. Don’t be afraid to ask. Write.
