Hello!

My feet have barely touched the ground this month. It’s good to be back to blogging!

I was inspired by a poetry reading a friend took me to recently, where audience participation was encouraged (we dared each other to write and read out our work – it was good to be reminded of what it is like to be on the other side!). We were asked to write the first sentence of our story – reflecting on where we are now. It wasn’t about writing the first line of our novels. This is the sentence I wrote (pictured); “I sometimes feel as if I am only at the beginning.” I explored this further in my block of three February Wednesday workshops. The workshops went really well, with almost a full house. Here is the first line from one of the participants:

” It’s  taken me 47 years to know myself” JW

Here are some of the opening lines from my Claremont & *Colville Groups (*C&C sheltered housing scheme):

” My life begins with a full stop.” PM

” Life starts at the beginning.” LG

“It began on the moonlight falling in the sea.” KE

“The past is a good source for beginnings. The past need not be 1000 AD, but yesterday will do.” GB

“My story begins in blood, or the beginning of blood.” SB

“I am who I am.” JI

“My new beginning was when I was 12, I went to Twickenham Art School.” AM

“Jack was a fellow student of mine at the University.” TM

“My story begins with a disaster.” MD

“How strange one’s life turns out.” JM

“I’m now near the end of a long life.” MB

TRY THIS: How would you begin your story? You could try ‘My story begins with’ as a way in if you wish…Enjoy!

I would love to hear from you by email or your posts on the blog, if you wish to share your sentences.
